Greener homes, brighter future
From 1930s semi-detached to sustainable showcase - see the transformation to improve the energy efficiency of this Cambridge property.

For 175 years, The Cambridge has been tackling housing challenges....
and now we're taking on one of the biggest yet.
Upgrading homes across the UK is key to cutting carbon emissions and reaching net zero by 2050. That’s where home retrofit comes in: improving energy efficiency, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and making homes warmer, more comfortable, and more affordable to run.
With 29 million homes needing upgrades, we’re showing what’s possible — starting with a typical 1930s semi-detached house.
Small steps, smart choices, big impact. Let’s make greener living achievable for everyone.

Step inside the before and after reveal of this beautifully transformed 1930s semi-detached home in Cambridge, now a showcase of deep retrofit innovation.
What we achieved
The retrofit of our 1930s semi-detached house in Cambridge has exceeded expectations for improved energy efficiency in all areas. Originally rated EPC D, the property has transformed into a carbon-positive home with an EPC rating of A, building towards Passive House standards.

Carbon emissions
We transformed the carbon emissions from 3.6 tonnes to –0.2 tonnes, making it a carbon positive home. It doesn’t just reduce emissions, it actively helps remove carbon from the atmosphere.

EPC Rating
An EPC rating shows how energy-efficient a property is, graded from A (best) to G (worst). We transformed the rating from D to A.

Airtightness
Airtightness measures how much air leaks through a building’s surface under pressure. Lower scores mean better airtightness and better energy efficiency. We significantly reduced the score.

We've been shortlisted for a UK Green Business Award
Our retrofit project at Ferndale Rise has been recognised by the prestigious UK Green Business Awards 2026 for 'Green Building Project of the Year'. We are delighted to join many other incredible shortlisted projects - winners to be announced in June.
How we improved its energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions:
- Internal, external, ground and loft insulation
- Air source heat pump and underfloor heating
- Mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery
- Airtightness measures
- Solar panels
- Triple glazed windows
