We've donated to charities to celebrate new store

We've donated £2,000 to local charities to celebrate the opening of our new store in Bury St Edmunds.

We presented £1,000 each to Bury Drop In and Gatehouse to commemorate the opening of our new branch, which launched in Butter Market in January.

It is the first branch we've launched in a new location in more than 15 years.

Our CEO, Peter Burrows, presented cheques to the two charities at an informal get together in the branch on Monday evening (21st February).

“The new store has been open just over a month and the response from the local community has been overwhelming,” said Peter.

“We have been supporting local communities with homes and housing since we founded in 1850. It is something that is part of The Cambridge’s DNA, so we are donating funds to charities who help the homeless and vulnerably housed. Both charities do great work and we are proud to support them.”

Robert Green, Chair of Trustees of Bury Drop In, said: “We are very grateful to The Cambridge for its generous donation. This funding will provide valuable support to people who are homeless and vulnerably housed in Bury St Edmunds.”

Gatehouse’s CEO, Amanda Bloomfield, said: “As an independent charity helping the vulnerable in the Bury St Edmunds area we rely on the generosity and support of businesses like The Cambridge. We are thrilled they have chosen to support us as part of the celebration of the opening of the new store in Butter Market.”

The Bury team led by experienced Store Team Leader, Vaughan Potter, welcomed guests including local business leaders, dignitaries, charities and members of the Society’s leadership team, including Chairman, John Spence.

The team also held a Valentine’s themed welcome day on Monday, 14th February, and gave away children’s money boxes and balloons, tote bags, chocolates and shortbread biscuits. All refreshments and gifts at both events were sourced from local Bury-based businesses.

Dozens of visitors came in to chat to the staff and experience the new branch, which follows the vibrant, open-plan décor of The Cambridge’s recently updated stores in Cambridge, Ely, St Ives, Bar Hill, Histon, Cherry Hinton and Great Shelford.
