Data Protection
The Society fully supports the Data Protection Act 1998 to ensure that all personal data is processed in accordance with good data protection practice complying with the Data Protection Act 1998 principles, which are:
- Data shall be processed fairly and lawfully.
- Data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes and shall not be processed in any manner incompatible with these purposes.
- Data shall be adequate, relevant and not excessive.
- Data shall be accurate and kept up-to-date.
- Data shall not be kept for longer than necessary.
- Data shall be processed in accordance with the rights of data subjects.
- Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised/unlawful processing and against accidental loss, damage or destruction.
- Data shall not be transferred to a country outside the European Economic Area unless that country ensures adequate protection.
For the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998, Cambridge Building Society is the data cotroller and the Act is enforced and overseen by the Information Commissioner.
Your rights
Under the Act you have a right to:
- An adequate level of security for your personal information.
- Object to direct marketing:
i) You can opt out of marketing when completing an application form. We will remind you of this right at least once every 3 years.
ii) You can write to the following address at any time, quoting your account numbers and requesting that your name be taken off our marketing list.

- We will charge you a fee of £10 to process your request.
- Have incorrect personal information corrected. If your personal information in our records is inaccurate, you can provide us with the correct information and we will correct it.
- Compensation if we breach the law and you suffer damage. If you suffer loss or damage because we do not comply with the Data Protection Act, you may be entitled to compensation.
