Community magazine

Local editors and publishers came together last night as The Cambridge Building Society hosted its 13th annual Community Magazine Awards.

The awards ceremony which took place at Marshall’s Cambridge Airport contained eight categories, formed to recognise the wide variety of community magazines in East Anglia. The categories were: 2010 Special Award, Best Specialist Magazine, Best Commercial Magazine, Best Newcomer, Most Improved Magazine, Previous Winner, High Frequency Magazine and Low Frequency Magazine.

Stephen Mitcham, Chief Executive at The Cambridge Building Society was the compere for the evening, joined by employees from the Society and by the five judges to present the awards. The judges were: Brain Hayes, Trustee at Cambridgeshire Acre, Marion Sutcliffe, Vice Chair of the Cambridge Federation of the Women’s Institute, Louise Bateman, Head of People at The Cambridge Building Society, Linda Iggulden, Branch Manager at The Cambridge Building Society’s Bar Hill branch and Chris Elliot, Senior Reporter at The Cambridge News.

More than 40 community magazines entered this years awards, showing the continued strength of the industry and the popularity of the magazines amongst local people. 

The winners of the awards were as follows: 

  • 2010 Special Award based on the best front page - Sawston Scene
  • Best Specialist Magazine – Bronze: News @ Com   Silver: Lingua@com/Sports@com Joint Gold: About Town & GOBA news
  • Best Commercial Magazine - Villager & Town Life
  • Best Newcomer – Bulbeck Beacon
  • Most Improved – Willingham News
  • Previous Winner – Melbourn Magazine
  • Low Frequency Magazine – Bronze: Ashdon Village Magazine Silver: Littleport Life Gold: Within Reach
  • High Frequency Magazine – Bronze: Fen Drayton Magazine Silver: The Link Gold: Willingham News

Stephen Mitcham, Chief Executive at The Cambridge Building Society says: “This year’s awards have been a huge success. The quality of the material submitted has been outstanding.
