50 Brazilian Representatives Visit The Cambridge
On Tuesday 2nd August 2011, the 50 representatives arrived in Cambridge to visit the local Building Society and see the city.
After attending the World Credit Union Conference in Glasgow, the representatives requested that they visit a Building Society that could educate them on its work in the community. The Cambridge was chosen after being recognised as a society that plays a key role in the local community, with its various fundraising, sponsorship and charitable donations.
The Society gave a series of presentations, including; Welcome from the Chief Executive, The History of the Society, The Re-brand and The Society in The Community, amongst others.
Adrian Coles OBE, Director-General, BSA said: "The Cambridge Building Society is a great example of a local building society working within its community, and should provide the Brazilian Credit Union representatives with a fascinating introduction to UK building societies."
A trip around the University colleges for the representatives and a visit to The Cambridge Building Society flagship St Andrew’s Street branch had been planned and the day was rounded off with a traditional British lunch of fish and chips, which was served at The Cambridge’s city centre Head Office.
Stephen Mitcham, Chief Executive of The Cambridge Building Society said: “It was a great honour to be asked to host the 50 Credit Union representatives from Brazil. It gave us the chance to show them how the Society works and educate them on our commitment to the local community.
"It also gave us a chance to show them what a magnificent place Cambridge is and generate some tourism for the city.”
Joshua Fetting, International Partnerships Officer at the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) said: “These types of exchanges between different credit union and cooperative movements are important as they provide both organisations a new perspective on common challenges and solutions. We also find that although the languages and landscapes may be different, many credit unions and cooperatives all over the world face the same problems.”
