Sawston Fun Run makes record donation to local charities

On 9th July a record £20,250 was presented to the beneficiaries of the 2008 Sawston Fun Run and Walk. At a presentation held in the Henry Morris Hall at Sawston Village College, nine local charities and organisations benefited from the Fun Run that took place on 27th April. The event, organised by Sawston District Rotary Club and sponsored by the Cambridge Building Society, attracted a record number of 1,160 runners and walkers, nearly 300 more than in 2007. This funds raised took the total amount donated to charities and organisations serving Sawston and Cambridgeshire to £311,000 since the event was started in 1986.

June Cannie, Principal of Sawston Village College welcomed over 140 members of the community - representatives from the charities, the sponsors, key supporters and thanked members of the Rotary Club of Sawston District who organised the event.

Andrew Ferguson, Head of Business Development at the Cambridge Building Society, expressed the building society’s pleasure at being associated with such a large community event and said: "It reflects the building society’s commitment to the local community throughout its branch network and we're pleased the Sawston branch staff were so supportive."

This year cheques were presented to nine local beneficiaries;

  • PIPPINS PRE-SCHOOL - £750 to help with the development of outdoor facilities. 
  • SOUTH CAMBS RIDING FOR THE DIABLED - £1,000 to pay for the hire of ponies.
  • MAGPAS - £1,000 to help buy specialist medical equipment for roadside accidents
  • 1ST SAWSTON SCOUTS - £1,500 to purchase camping equipment for the scouts, cubs & beavers.
  • SAWSTON YOUTH DRAMA - £2,500 to purchase modern sound equipment.
  • SAWSTON YOUTH GROUP - £2,500 to help purchase equipment for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme and band equipment.
  • TEENAGE CANCER TRUST AT ADDENBROOKES - £2,500 to help fund the new 12 bed teenage cancer unit to be built at Addenbrookes Hospital - adding to the £5,000 already donated from the 2005 event and other funds from our Rotary club.
  • PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT ASSOCIATION - £3,500 to help purchase equipment for the Addenbrookes Urology and Oncology departments.
  • CAMBRIDGE CANCER HELP CENTRE UNIT AT SCOTSDALES - £5,000 to help fund the new counselling and support centre being built in Great Shelford at Scotsdales Garden Centre.

The 2009 Fun Run & Walk will take place on Sunday 10th May.
