Society staff go back to school for a clean up

22.10.2008

Members of staff from Cambridge Building Society gave up their free time last weekend and went back to school to help clear and clean up the outdoor areas at Godmanchester Community Primary School.

Twelve members of staff from the Society’s ‘Make A Difference’ (MAD) community support group, spent the morning at the School helping to clear garden borders, digging over the children’s vegetable patch, tidying the school’s outdoor bike storage area and re-sculpting the school's willow tunnel after a summer of growth.

The Group, which was set up by the Society’s staff to provide a hands-on approach to various community support initiatives, contacted the St Ives Volunteer Bureau to offer their services for projects in and around St Ives and Huntingdon and were put in touch with Godmanchester Community Primary School.

Elish Millard, who has just retired as Manager of the St Ives Volunteer Bureau, comments, “We are thoroughly grateful to the Cambridge Building Society and its team of volunteers. The School has some wonderful outdoor areas where the children can play and learn how to grow their own plants and food; however, some of these areas were in a desperate need of a cut back and a tidy up to make sure they were safe for the children.”

Lynn Green, a member of the ‘Make A Difference’ group at the Society’s head office in Newmarket Road (Cambridge), adds, “The Make A Difference community group is all about getting out there into the local communities, rolling your sleeves up and offering hands on assistance and support to worthwhile causes.

“We were delighted to help out at the School and I’d like to thank all of our volunteers for giving up their free time.”
